World Cup Fans Confront Soaring Costs

(MENAFN) Millions of supporters preparing to attend the World Cup this week are bracing for steep expenses, covering everything from transportation to match tickets — and even the price of a simple bottle of water.

More than 5 million attendees are anticipated at this year’s event, which spans cities across the US, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the format has expanded to 48 teams, up from the traditional 32, competing in a total of 104 matches.

This enlargement is largely driven by FIFA’s ambition to significantly boost revenue, which is projected to reach as high as $11 billion. However, fans are encountering widespread sticker shock as a result.

An evaluation by the TicketDatawebsite reveals that as of June 9, the “get in” price for group stage tickets on the resale market averages $636 per seat. That figure is three times higher than the peak price for group stage tickets at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when Category 1 tickets cost about $220, according to information from the Statistawebsite.
