Iran Says Talks Must Follow Law, Warns of Global Impact From Hormuz Risks
According to a statement from Iran’s presidency, Pezeshkian made the remarks during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders discussed regional tensions, US–Iran talks mediated through Pakistan, and the status of a ceasefire process.
Pezeshkian said Iran’s negotiating team had engaged in discussions with “seriousness and goodwill” in an effort to reach a lasting agreement. However, he claimed that progress at the technical level was undermined by what he described as “maximalist demands and lack of political will” from US officials.
He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy, but emphasized that negotiations must remain “within international legal frameworks” and aim at protecting the rights of the Iranian people. He also suggested that European countries could play a constructive role in encouraging Washington to adhere to diplomatic principles.
The Iranian president said Iran remains committed to previously announced ceasefire conditions and rejected claims that it had violated or altered its position.
He also warned against recent threats related to the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that while Iran supports secure maritime passage, any actions undermining the waterway’s safety could have wide-reaching consequences for global trade.
