Bangladesh Air Force jet crashes into college campus

(MENAFN) A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a college campus in the capital Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 100 others, officials said.

According to the Fire Services Department, most of the victims were students and staff at the Milestone School and College in the Uttara neighborhood, where the crash occurred. The pilot, the sole occupant of the jet, survived but was among those injured.

Footage from the scene showed thick smoke and flames engulfing the building after the aircraft struck the campus around 1:06 p.m. local time.

Sayedur Rahman, a special assistant to the head of the interim government, confirmed the casualties, noting that between 100 and 150 people had suffered burns. “Among them are around 70 students,” Rahman said, adding that the injured were rushed to hospitals across Dhaka.

In response to the tragedy, the interim government declared a state of mourning to be observed on Tuesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, confirmed the aircraft was on a training flight at the time of the crash. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

This is not the first fatal crash involving the Bangladesh Air Force. In July 2018, two pilots were killed when a trainer jet went down in the southwestern Jessore district.
