Intense Heat Wave Set to Scorch Southern Italy
This hot air mass, named the third "African heat wave" of the summer, will predominantly impact southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia.
Temperatures in these areas could climb to 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit), nearing the European record of 48.8 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) established in Sicily in August 2021, as reported by an Italian news agency.
Officials indicate that temperatures will stay well above the seasonal average throughout the week, with highs forecasted to surpass 42°C (108°F) in regions including Puglia, Basilicata, Sardinia, and Sicily.
The intense heat won’t be confined to the south; central Italy will also experience elevated temperatures, with peaks close to 36°C (97°F) in metropolitan areas such as Rome and Florence.
Filippo Anelli, president of Italy’s National Federation of the Orders of Physicians, called for “maximum attention” to be given to vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those suffering from chronic health conditions, during the ongoing heat wave.
In contrast, northern Italy is expected to encounter unstable weather patterns due to the interaction between the incoming African heat and a low-pressure system situated over northern Europe.
This atmospheric conflict is predicted to generate severe thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy downpours, particularly affecting the Alpine and Prealpine regions.
