Japanese PM wants “bipartisan” backing following significant electoral loss

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Monday called for “bipartisan” cooperation following a significant electoral loss that saw his ruling coalition lose its majority in the upper house of parliament, according to a public broadcaster.

“While I am keenly aware of the great responsibility for the results of this election, I must fulfill my responsibilities as the leading party in the nation and to the people so as to avoid political stagnation," Ishiba said during a news conference.

Expressing his commitment to constructive dialogue, the prime minister added, “I would like to sincerely deepen discussions with other parties and approach national politics with a sincere devotion to my country.” He emphasized that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) would continue working for “Japan's future and its people.”

The ruling LDP and its coalition partner Komeito secured around 47 out of the 125 contested seats—falling short of the 50 needed to maintain a majority in the 248-seat upper house. Despite the setback, the LDP remains the largest single party, winning 39 seats, while the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan became the second-largest with 22 seats.

The ruling bloc’s presence in the upper house has now been reduced to 122 seats, down from 141 before the election. A party or coalition needs at least 125 seats to control the chamber.

Although shaken by the loss, Ishiba ruled out expanding the current coalition framework. “I have no intention of expanding the coalition,” he said, affirming instead a willingness to cooperate across party lines to ensure stable governance.
