Russia Ends Defense Pact with Germany
(MENAFN) Russia has officially annulled a long-standing military-technical agreement with Germany, a nation that has recently emerged as a major backer and arms supplier for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Moscow. The decision underscores the deepening divide between the two countries.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin directed the Foreign Ministry to notify Berlin of the decision to cancel the 1996 agreement, which had shaped military collaboration for nearly thirty years. The termination was formalized through a decree signed on Friday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had already signaled the impending dissolution of the deal in July, arguing that the agreement had become outdated.
Officials pointed to what they called Germany’s “openly hostile” stance and escalating military ambitions.
They further accused Berlin of "indoctrinating" its citizens to consider Russia as the principal threat.
Earlier this week, the Kremlin expressed heightened concern over Germany's public discourse.
Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that Berlin is “becoming dangerous again” following a statement from German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who said German forces are prepared to kill Russian troops “if deterrence doesn’t work and Russia attacks.”
Moscow has strongly rejected any claims that it intends to assault NATO, dismissing such assertions as “nonsense.”
President Vladimir Putin has alleged that Western nations are misleading their citizens to justify expanding defense expenditures and to obscure economic shortcomings.
The termination of the agreement marks a symbolic and strategic break from a decades-old military partnership, and highlights the increasingly strained relations between Russia and Germany.
