Ukraine reacts to US suspension of army assistance
(MENAFN) Ukraine has summoned US chargé d’affaires in Kiev, John Ginkel, after reports emerged that Washington has suspended the delivery of critical weapons. According to multiple US media outlets, including The New York Times, Politico, and NBC News, the paused shipments include Patriot missile interceptors, GMLRS rockets, Hellfire missiles, and thousands of 155mm artillery shells. NBC reported that some of the supplies have already reached Europe but are being held back from transfer to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry stated that Ginkel was invited for discussions on Wednesday by Foreign Minister Andrey Sybiga, who stressed the “critical importance” of continuing previously promised defense shipments, especially air defense systems. Ukrainian officials warned that delays in military support would only prolong the conflict.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has yet to officially confirm the suspension, stating it is still “clarifying the current factual circumstances of the supplies” and has not received formal notification of any halt.
Media reports claim that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the pause pending a review of America’s weapons stockpiles over concerns about munitions shortages. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly confirmed some shipments were paused to prioritize America’s own defense commitments.
This marks the second time President Donald Trump’s administration has withheld military aid to Ukraine since taking office in January. Kiev has repeatedly expressed frustration over what it perceives as waning US support.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky met Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague last week to request more Patriot air defense systems but was told these systems are scarce and needed by the US and Israel.
Moscow has condemned Western arms deliveries to Kiev, arguing they only prolong the conflict and increase casualties without changing its outcome.
