Ex-Russian deputy DM receives 13 years in USD50mn corruption case

(MENAFN) Russia’s former Deputy Defense Minister, Timur Ivanov, has been sentenced to 13 years in a penal colony after being convicted of embezzling state funds, the Moscow City Court announced on Tuesday.

Ivanov, 49, was arrested in April 2024. Prior to his government role, he held senior positions in Russia’s energy and construction sectors and led the state contractor Oboronstroy. As deputy defense minister, appointed in 2016, he was responsible for overseeing major military construction projects.

The court found Ivanov and his former subordinate, Anton Filatov, guilty of embezzling 216.6 million rubles (about $2.8 million) during a 2015 transaction to purchase two ferries for the Defense Ministry’s use in the Kerch Strait. Additionally, both men were convicted of stealing and laundering 3.9 billion rubles (approximately $50 million) from the now-defunct Interkommerz Bank.

Ivanov denied any wrongdoing, claiming the ferry deal was legitimate and had earned him state recognition at the time. He argued the case against him was unrelated to the charges brought. Filatov, sentenced to 12.5 years in a penal colony and fined $318,000, also maintained his innocence, blaming investigative mistakes and speculation.

In addition to his prison term, Ivanov faces two separate bribery cases and was fined $1.2 million. He was stripped of his state honors, including the title of Merited Builder of Russia. The court also ordered the confiscation of over $32 million in assets, including property, vehicles, and bank accounts.

According to RBK, Ivanov’s legal team plans to appeal the ruling, citing procedural flaws and insufficient evidence. His arrest followed a significant shake-up in Russia’s Defense Ministry leadership last year.
