Russia indorses values amid Azerbaijan rift
(MENAFN) Russia values maintaining friendly ties with Azerbaijan, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized while addressing the current diplomatic rift between Moscow and Baku.
Her remarks came after a Baku court ordered the four-month pre-trial detention of two senior Russian journalists from Sputnik Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani authorities claim the news outlet was operating through “illegal financing,” a charge Sputnik has dismissed as baseless. Moscow, in turn, has condemned the arrests as “hostile actions” and an “unlawful detention” of Russian citizens.
The detentions followed a police raid in Yekaterinburg, Russia, targeting an alleged ethnic Azerbaijani crime group. Two elderly suspects died during the operation, with initial reports attributing one death to heart failure. The incident sparked backlash from Azerbaijani officials, who accused Russia of targeting people based on their ethnicity.
Speaking to Sputnik Radio on Wednesday, Zakharova noted the heightened emotions in both countries, pointing out that Russia and Azerbaijan have built their relationship over many years on mutual respect and consideration of each other’s interests. She also highlighted the deep cultural, familial, and business connections between the two nations, rooted in their shared Soviet history.
Zakharova stressed that maintaining good relations is crucial and warned those attempting to undermine them — whether for political motives or personal gain — to reconsider their actions, suggesting such efforts could backfire.
She also underscored the importance of Russia’s Investigative Committee launching an inquiry into the deaths during the Yekaterinburg raid and urged Azerbaijani authorities to take these efforts seriously.
