Moscow reacts to NATO director’s ‘Jesus’ remark regarding Lavrov
Rutte, in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, downplayed Lavrov’s importance by quipping, “He’s been Russia’s foreign minister since the birth of Jesus Christ, and since then, nothing useful has come out of his mouth.”
Zakharova responded on Telegram, saying it’s no coincidence Lavrov’s long tenure has led the NATO chief to “remember Jesus Christ.” Lavrov has served as Russia’s top diplomat since 2004.
Rutte, who took over as NATO’s secretary general less than a year ago, has already faced criticism within Europe. According to Politico, some officials were reportedly uncomfortable with how overtly flattering he was toward US President Donald Trump during last week’s NATO summit.
One unnamed official said the behavior was “embarrassing” and described Rutte’s praise of Trump as excessive. Reports also highlighted that Rutte referred to Trump as “daddy” and praised Washington’s military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Trump later shared Rutte’s comments online, and the White House posted a video from the summit accompanied by Usher’s song “Daddy’s Home.
