Beijing Responds to Ukraine’s Detention of Chinese Nationals
(MENAFN) On Thursday, Beijing stated it was “still verifying” the details concerning Ukraine’s assertion that it apprehended two Chinese citizens suspected of attempting to smuggle classified documents.
“If this is concerned with Chinese citizens, then the lawful rights of Chinese citizens need to be safeguarded,” declared Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a live-streamed press briefing held in Beijing.
Earlier on Wednesday, Kyiv announced it had taken into custody two Chinese nationals suspected of trying to illegally transfer classified information related to a Ukrainian missile system out of the country.
The Ukraine Security Service (SBU) reported that the two Chinese individuals were arrested in Kyiv and are suspected of attempting to smuggle sensitive documents pertaining to the RK-360MC Neptune missile system.
The SBU added that this missile system was instrumental in Ukraine’s sinking of the Russian missile cruiser Moskva, which was previously the flagship of Moscow’s Black Sea fleet in 2022.
The investigation revealed that one of the detainees was a former student who had been expelled from a technical university in Kyiv in 2023.
“Another defendant is his father, who permanently resided in China but periodically visited Ukraine to personally coordinate his son's spy work,” the SBU’s statement further explained.
