AI Impersonation Targets US, Foreign Officials

(MENAFN) An individual pretending to be U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has utilized artificial intelligence tools to send deceptive voice and written messages to high-level political figures, according to a report published on Tuesday by a news outlet.

The fraudulent actor reached out to no fewer than five people, which included three foreign ministers, a U.S. state governor, and a congressional representative.

These communications were delivered through the secure messaging platform Signal and included both audio and text that closely resembled Rubio’s vocal tone and written expression.

This information comes from a U.S. State Department communication and confirmation by a senior American official, the report noted.

The impersonation operation reportedly commenced in mid-June.

The perpetrator established a Signal account under the name “...,” though this alias was not associated with any legitimate government email system.

The impersonator left recorded messages and dispatched written communications encouraging recipients to continue engaging through the Signal app.

Additionally, the internal cable mentioned that other staff members from the State Department had their identities faked through email correspondence.

The U.S. State Department has confirmed the occurrence of the incident and is actively investigating and addressing the situation.

“The State Department is aware of this incident and is currently monitoring and addressing the matter,” spokeswoman Tammy Bruce informed reporters.

“The department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously take steps to improve the department’s cybersecurity posture to prevent future incidents.”
