U.S. Blasts UN Report Blaming Firms for Backing Israeli Occupation

(MENAFN) The US Mission to the United Nations sharply criticized a new report by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, accusing her of waging "economic warfare" against American and global companies by labeling them as complicit in Israel’s occupation and military operations in the Palestinian territories.

In a statement released Tuesday, the mission condemned Albanese for sending threatening correspondence to numerous entities worldwide, including major US corporations. These letters accused the companies of being involved in "gross human rights violations, apartheid, and genocide."

“These letters also constitute an unacceptable campaign of political and economic warfare against the American and worldwide economy,” the statement emphasized, calling Albanese’s claims about Israel “false and offensive.”

The United States reiterated its demand for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to publicly denounce Albanese’s actions and to take steps toward her removal from the role of Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.

“The United States warned that continued failure to do so would not only discredit the United Nations but would also require significant actions in response to Ms. Albanese’s misconduct,” the statement continued.

Albanese’s controversial report, set to be presented in Geneva on Thursday, allegedly points to corporations, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Palantir, as being complicit in supporting Israel’s illegal occupation by providing military equipment, surveillance technologies, and other infrastructure.

Since October 2023, the Israeli military has intensified its offensive against Gaza, rejecting global ceasefire calls. The ongoing operation has led to the deaths of over 56,500 Palestinians, the majority being women and children.

In a related development, last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Furthermore, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its actions in the Gaza Strip.
