GOP Senate Passes Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”

(MENAFN) The GOP-controlled Senate passed President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” on Tuesday, bringing the legislation one step closer to his desk for a signature by the end of this week. The bill narrowly passed with a 51-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote. Notably, three Republican senators — Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, and Rand Paul — voted against it.

This bill is considered the GOP's most significant legislative achievement ahead of the 2024 midterms, a critical period during which the party could lose its slim majority in the House of Representatives. Among its provisions, the legislation extends Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, reduces taxes on tips, and allocates new funding for military and border security initiatives.

“Today was a historic day ... and we're very excited to be a part of something that is going to make America stronger, safer and more prosperous,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after the bill passed.

However, the bill still faces a crucial challenge in the House of Representatives, where a vote is anticipated as early as Wednesday.

“It’s a great bill. There is something for everyone, and I think it's going to go very nicely in the House. Actually, I think it will be easier in the House than it was in the Senate,” Trump commented, expressing confidence in the outcome.

Despite its momentum, the bill has drawn fierce criticism from Democrats, who oppose the bill's priorities, which sharply contrast their own. The proposed tax cuts, which Republicans argue will benefit the middle class, are blasted by Democrats as being primarily advantageous to the wealthy.

Moreover, the bill has sparked anger among Democrats over reductions in essential programs, including Medicaid (healthcare for low-income individuals) and food assistance. There are also concerns that the bill’s provisions could add trillions of dollars to the rapidly growing national debt.
