Israeli Troops Kill Palestinian for Alleged Stabbing Attack

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian man suspected of attempting a stabbing attack near Bethlehem in the West Bank, while Israeli raids across the region resulted in the arrest of at least 60 Palestinians, according to reports from both Palestinian and Israeli officials.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Moataz al-Hajjajleh, 21, was fatally shot by Israeli forces in al-Walaja, a town located west of Bethlehem. The ministry also stated that Israeli authorities confiscated his body following the incident.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military detailed that the event took place during an operation in al-Walaja, where a suspect allegedly tried to stab soldiers and wrest weapons from them. The military confirmed that its forces responded with gunfire, killing the suspect, and noted that no Israeli soldiers were injured.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, a non-governmental organization, revealed that Israeli forces had detained no fewer than 60 Palestinians in overnight raids throughout various West Bank locations. The group highlighted that among those arrested were former prisoners, women, and minors.

Palestinian human rights organizations estimate that over 10,000 Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on October 7, 2023.

In the context of growing regional tensions, the Palestinian Authority's Jerusalem Governorate reported that Israeli authorities have maintained the closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for a sixth straight day. The governorate also indicated that security measures at the entrances to Jerusalem’s Old City have been significantly intensified.

Israel seized control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War. While East Jerusalem is internationally recognized as occupied Palestinian territory, Israel’s annexation of the area remains unacknowledged by the global community.
