Italy Urges Diplomacy to Halt Iran’s Nuclear Program

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared on Tuesday night that Iran must not be permitted to obtain nuclear capabilities, underlining the importance of pursuing a peaceful resolution to the issue.

During a press conference in Canada following the G7 summit, Meloni asserted that Iran has been a significant factor of unrest in the region.

She warned that an Iran equipped with nuclear arms would endanger both Western nations and Israel.

Meloni stood by Israel’s military actions against Iran, describing them as a "right to self-defense."

She referenced a recent assessment by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which, according to her, confirmed Iran's nuclear intentions.

Despite these concerns, the Italian leader emphasized that a negotiated, peaceful approach to prevent Iran from acquiring atomic weaponry remains not only viable but preferable.

When questioned about the potential involvement of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a mediator, Meloni firmly rejected the idea, stating: “Putin, leader of a country waging war against another country, cannot be entrusted with the role of mediator.”

She further accused the Russian president of lacking genuine intent to bring peace to Ukraine, pointing to recent Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian civilians as evidence of what she labeled "openly provocative" behavior.
