Italy Imposes Ban on Phones in High Schools

(MENAFN) Italy is intensifying its efforts to curb smartphone use in classrooms, with a new directive officially extending a ban on cellphones to include high school students starting next academic year.

The directive, signed by Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara, broadens an earlier rule that already restricted phone use in elementary and middle schools during instructional hours. Now, high school students across the country will also be required to keep their devices out of sight during lessons and school activities.

"This measure has become urgent. It can no longer be postponed, given the negative impact of excessive or improper use of smartphones on adolescents’ health, well-being, and academic performance, as clearly shown by scientific studies," Valditara emphasized in a statement.

He also noted that a growing body of research, along with warnings from international organizations, has emphasized the urgency of implementing measures to address these "alarming trends."

According to the directive, limited exceptions will remain. Students with disabilities or recognized learning disorders may still use smartphones when necessary for assistive purposes.
In addition, devices may be employed for educational activities, especially in technical courses related to information and communication technology.

This expanded regulation builds upon a prior directive issued by Valditara in July 2024, which barred cellphone use during school hours for primary and middle school students, also taking effect in the 2024–2025 school year.

The updated policy marks a firm step toward minimizing distractions and safeguarding student mental health amid increasing concern over screen time among youth.
