Myanmar families flee homes due to military clashes

(MENAFN) Hundreds of families in Myanmar are fleeing their homes to escape escalating clashes between the military and anti-coup guerrillas, a local organiser reported on Saturday. Since the military takeover in 2021, the country has been engulfed in a complex civil war that has displaced over 3.5 million people, according to UN data.

Heavy fighting has been ongoing since Monday near Saung Nang Khae village in Shan state. Locals described convoys of tractors loaded with livestock, wheelchairs, and personal belongings transporting families to temporary refuge in BC Kone village, approximately 60 kilometers southwest.

Khun Pyae Linn, spokesperson for the youth wing of the Kayan New Land Party—which controls the area and coordinated the evacuation—stated, “rescue operations are still ongoing.” He noted that while over 600 people have been evacuated, other groups are assisting as well, potentially bringing the total number of relocated villagers to more than 1,500.
