Vucic Defends Serbia's Neutral Stance on Ukraine, Russia
The head of state took part in the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit held in Odessa on Wednesday, marking his initial visit to Ukraine since assuming office 12 years ago, as reported by a news agency.
In response to a journalist’s inquiry, Vucic questioned, “Who did I betray? Russia? With what, exactly?”
He emphasized that he had declined to endorse the summit’s concluding statement, which denounced Russia and expressed backing for Ukraine’s NATO ambitions.
Vucic highlighted that this was the fourth summit of its kind he had attended, and once more, he was the sole participant who chose not to support the declaration.
“This was my fourth Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit, and once again, I was the only one who refused to endorse the declaration,” he reaffirmed.
The Serbian leader underscored his country’s intention to preserve positive relations with both Ukraine and Russia.
“I am proud of Serbia’s policy and our independence, and that will not change,” he stated, reiterating the importance of diplomatic balance.
Serbia continues to be among the limited number of European nations that have opted not to enforce penalties against Russia or overtly align with Ukraine in the ongoing dispute.
Vucic has previously noted that the European Union has urged Belgrade to relinquish its position of neutrality and distance itself from Moscow.
