Trump issues threat to sanction both Russia, Ukraine

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has hinted that his administration may impose sanctions on both Russia and Ukraine if their ongoing war does not come to an end soon. Despite persistent pressure from European allies, Trump has so far refrained from backing new sanctions against Moscow, stating that he will act when he feels the timing is appropriate, and that point has not yet arrived. He also cautioned that additional sanctions could disrupt peace negotiations between the two nations.

Speaking alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House on Thursday, Trump indicated he had a personal timeline for intervention, saying, “It’s in my brain, the deadline.” He noted that if no resolution appears possible, the US may take a hard stance against both parties, declaring, “We’ll be very, very, very tough, and it could be on both countries to be honest.”

Trump compared the war to “two children fighting in a park” and emphasized the importance of a fair assessment. He also referenced a Senate sanctions bill, sponsored by Senator Lindsey Graham, that would impose a 500% tariff on nations purchasing Russian energy and raw materials — primarily targeting India and China. Trump said the bill would ultimately be “guided by me,” but hinted it might be wise to let the fighting continue a bit longer before intervening diplomatically.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory have intensified, including drone strikes on airbases and sabotage operations on railways in the Bryansk and Kursk regions, resulting in seven deaths and multiple injuries. Moscow claims these acts are designed to disrupt peace negotiations and has accused Kiev of undermining talks.

The Kremlin has also suggested that Trump is receiving skewed information about the situation, influenced by those in Washington who support Ukraine. Russia has maintained that its military actions are in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on civilian areas.

Trump revealed that he had an unscheduled phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. During the call, which Trump described as “a good conversation,” Putin reportedly warned that recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian airfields would force a response and were aimed at sabotaging peace talks — the latest of which occurred in Istanbul earlier this week.
