Macron affirms "(ocean) abyss is not for sale"
In a pointed message likely aimed at the frequent comments made by US leadership regarding Greenland, Macron stated, "The (ocean) abyss is not for sale," further emphasizing that Greenland and Antarctica are similarly not available for purchase.
This statement precedes Macron’s planned visit to Greenland later this week, which officials describe as a symbolic show of solidarity with the autonomous Danish territory.
Since his return to office earlier this year, the US President has repeatedly voiced interest in acquiring Greenland, despite Denmark’s unequivocal refusal to consider such proposals.
Greenland has been under Danish sovereignty since the 18th century and gained home rule in 1979. Positioned strategically between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, it holds significant mineral wealth.
Both Greenland’s local government and Denmark continue to reject any discussions of selling the territory. Public opinion surveys conducted in January indicated that 85% of Greenland’s population oppose becoming part of the United States.
