Canada aims to lessen independence on US

(MENAFN) Canada’s Prime Minister announced on Monday that the country will reach NATO’s goal of allocating 2% of its GDP to defense this year, emphasizing the necessity of this move amid increasing global instability and Canada’s excessive reliance on the United States.

Describing Canada as “too reliant on the United States,” Mark Carney stated at a press event in Toronto that the 2% GDP defense spending benchmark will be met “half a decade ahead of schedule,” with plans to “further accelerate our investments in years to come.”

Carney cautioned that emerging global threats are “unraveling the rules-based international order,” forcing middle powers such as Canada to adjust accordingly.

He elaborated, "threats from a more dangerous and divided world are unraveling the rules-based international order, an order that was fused by the settlements at the end of the Second World War and the end of the Cold War, an order on which Canada has relied for longer than many of our lifetimes."

Pointing to intensifying strategic rivalries and recent controversial policies from the US, Carney remarked, "now the United States is beginning to monetize its hegemony, charging for access to its markets and reducing its relative contribution to our collective security."
